Ukamaka Olisakwe's 'Ogadinma' for OneRead in November in 2020

The One Read App offering for this month, Ukamaka Olisakwe’s Ogadinma, was revealed on November 2, 2020.

One Read is a mobile application, brought to you by Nigeria’s Sterling Bank and Ouida Books, aimed at promoting writers, publishers, and other players in the African book industry to create a community of readers. Readers have been getting access to some of the most stunning work today like Travellers by Helon Habila in June, We, The Scarred by Mukoma Wa Ngugi, Not My Time to Die by Yolande Mukagasana, Out of Darkness, Shining Light by Petina Gappah, and Prince of Monkeys by Nnamdi Ehirim.

The selected book for the app for November is Ukamaka Olisakwe’s sophomore novel Ogadinma. The book’s blurb goes thus;

“Ogadinma Or, Everything Will Be All Right” tells the story of the naïve and trusting teenager Ogadinma as she battles against Nigeria’s societal expectations in the 1980s.

After a rape and unwanted pregnancy leave her exiled from her family in Kano, thwarting her plans to go to university, she is sent to her aunt’s in Lagos and pressured into a marriage with an older man. When their whirlwind romance descends into abuse and indignity, Ogadinma is forced to channel her independence and resourcefulness to escape a fate that appears all but inevitable.

Ogadinma, the UK debut by Ukamaka Olisakwe, introduces a heroine for whom it is impossible not to root, and announces the author as a gifted chronicler of the patriarchal experience.
