Tsitsi Dangarembga is the headline artist at the Feminart Arts and Book Festival 2019 to be hosted in Lilongwe, Malawi from November 23-24.
Early in 2019, the Lilongwe-Based Story Club announced that they would be hosting the Feminart Arts and Book Festival, the first major literary festival to be hosted in the Malawian city. It was to feature book chats, panel discussions, workshops, art exhibitions, and performances. It would ask several questions in the context of feminism, femininity, and gender, under the theme “The Pursuit of Happiness.”
The team running the festival has announced the artists who will feature this year with the big draw being headliner Tsitsi Dangarembga. Dangarembga, who played a similar role for the Ake Festival this year, is the author of the Tambudzai trilogy of Nervous Conditions (1988), The Book of Not (2006), and This Mournable Body (2018). She is also a filmmaker of note writing Neria (1993), and directing Everyone’s Child (1996), and Growing Stronger (2005).
Other artists who will be at the festival will be Zukiswa Wanner, Lily Banda, Dr Asante Mtenje, Elizabeth Chilufya Chilangwa, George Kalukusha, Niq Mhlongo, James Murua, Cindy Chilimampunga, and Phindu Zaie Banda.
The festival will be hosted at the Crossroads Hotel, Madsoc Theatre, and the Storyclub Arts Café where entry will be free. Audiences will get the opportunity to buy books by the assembled writers who can then sign copies.
