The Rutanang Book Fair 2018, the third edition of the South African literary festival, will be hosted in Tlokwe from April 26-28, 2018.
In 2016, a team in the town of Tlokwe imagined a festival for their hometown. They settled on one they called ‘Rutanang’ which is a Sotho word means ‘learning from one another’ and called theirs event the Rutanang Book Fair. That festival was amazing display of the written word with some of the more well-known names in the Southern African literary scene featuring and learning from enthusiastic crowds who attended. They included Sabata-Mpho Mokae, Pinky Khoabane, Kholofelo Maenetsha, Unathi Magubeni, and many more. We were so impressed by their work that we quickly dubbed them the best new African literary festival of 2016.
The second edition of the festival would run exclusively online and that virtual event would perhaps show us what could possibly be the future of literary events. Futhi Ntshingila, Babongile Zulu, Kholofelo Maenetsha, Zanele Dlamini, Leleti The Author, Tiisetso Thiba, Shubnum Khan, Sabata Mpho Mokae, Lorna Monco, and Charmaine Kolwane Mrwebi were the guests who took part in that successful experiment. You can read more about that edition of the festival here.
The organisers of the festival have announced the dates for the next edition of the festival and they will happen at the Govan Mbeki Hall in the town of Tlokwe again. The dates will be Thursday April 26 and they will end on Saturday April 27.
The theme of the festival as well as guests who will be taking part have not been announced but as soon as these have been announced we shall be keeping y’all posted both here and over social media. You can follow the events from Rutanang Festival official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
