Rashad Hosein was declared the winner of the NGC Bocas Youth Writer Award 2022 at The Writer’s Centre, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, January 7, 2023.
The NGC Bocas Youth Writer Award, created by the Bocas Lit Fest and sponsored by the National Gas Company, identifies and celebrates young writers in Trinidad and Tobago across a broad spectrum of literary genres, including poetry, playwriting, fiction, creative non-fiction, journalism, scriptwriting, spoken word, blog writing, and song lyrics.
The 2022 judging panel, chaired by award-winning author Lisa Allen-Agostini, also included performing artist Gerelle Forbes, media expert and influencer Danielle “DJ Dani” Parkinson, spoken word artist Derron Sandy, and author Kevin Jared Hosein. Their shortlist announced on December 23 featured Shimiah Lewis (Spoken Word), Kervisha Cordice (Poetry), Rashad Hosein (Fiction), and Ronaldo Katwaroo (Creative Nonfiction).
The winner was stated to be Rashad Hosein whose entry Saga was in fiction.
“Unanimously, we found [Rashad Hosein’s] writing on par with the work of writers of much greater age,” said Allen-Agostini at the award ceremony. “His accomplished résumé is a testament to both his talent and his tenacity…. I guarantee this is not the last time you will hear his name called in a forum like this.”
Hosein established himself as a writer to watch when he won the John Steinbeck Award for Fiction from Reed Magazine. He has also been a finalist for the BCLF Elizabeth Nunez Award for Caribbean Writers, was longlisted for the Galley Beggar Press Short Story Prize, and was shortlisted twice for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2019 and 2021.
Hosein received a cash prize of TT$5,000 and will have his writing showcased as part of the 2023 NGC Bocas Youth Fest.
