Nnedi Okorafor

La Fille Aux Mains Magiques originally written in English by writer Nnedi Okorafor & artist Zariel won the Prix Elbakin.net 2021 on December 28, 2021.

Elbakin.net is a French website dealing with fantasy in all media (books, illustrations, comic books, films, TV fictions, games). Founded in 2000 by three fantasy lovers Raphaël Cervera, Jean-François le Gac and Emmanuel Chastellière it is one of the main Francophone information websites dedicated to the fantasy genre. From 2010, they introduced the Prix Elbakin.net prize which celebrates titles in fantasy written in French by both French residents and foreigners.

For 2021, the eligibility books written was from June 1, 2020 until May 31, 2021 with the shortlists being in the categories of French or francophone novels, “Adult” category and “Youth Category” as well as Foreign novels in the “Adult” category and “Youth Category”.

In the Foreign novels Youth Category there were five finalists and the winner revealed was La Fille Aux Mains Magiques (The girl with magic hands) originally written in English by Nnedi Okorafor & Zariel.

Nnedi Okorafor wins Prix Elbakin

The book’s blurb goes thus;

An unhappy and unloved child of her parents, Childera one day encounters spirits in the forest. They trace a tattoo on his hand and transmit their art to him. Now the magic of Childera’s drawings can transform sadness into joy. A short story about the difficulties of childhood and about art as a remedy for the ills of the world.

Nnedi Okorafor on revealing the win said, “Oh wow! The French edition of my book The Girl With the Magic Hands won an Elbakin Award!!”
