The Macondo Literary Festival 2022 will run at the Kenya National Theatre, Nairobi from September 30 – October 2, 2022.
The Macondo Literary Festival was first hosted by author Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor and journalist Anja Bengelstorff founded Macondo Book Society in Nairobi in 2019. The festival name came from “Macondo,” the fictional place where magical things happen in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Colombian Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Márquez. It was aimed at initiating and encouraging the engagement of a wider public with literature and its creators as a means of societal growth.
This first edition featured writers from Portuguese and English-speaking Africa, for conversations, debates, readings on African histories, and much more. Some of the featured guests were Ondjaki, Dina Salústio, Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa, Geovani Martins, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Novuyo Rosa Tshuma, Peter Kimani, and Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor. The second edition of the festival looks set to happen again this year at the Kenya National Theatre. The theme is “The Future of Memories.”
We shall keep you abreast of events as the festival comes closer. For now, we recommend that you block off that weekend to meet some of the coolest writerly folks.
