Lauren Beukes, Novuyo Tshuma win South African Awards

South African Lauren Beukes and Zimbabwean Novuyo Tshuma have been collecting awards today. Beukes won the 2013/2014 University of Johannesburg Prizes going home with 75,000 South African Rands. On her part Tshuma won the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for the best literary work in English at the Media24 literary awards.

Lauren Beukes won for her book The Shining Girls which made the Strand Magazine critics awards 2013. You can read more about the other winners of the awards at the folks who know the best about South African publishing scene here. Her newest book Broken Monsters will be coming out in a few weeks.

Tshuma, who is currently on a writing thingie in the US, was listed in the African39 list of writers to watch out for from Africa. Her prize was for her book Shadows published by Kwela.
