The Kenyan Readathon 2022, dedicated to Kenyan books, will have an official event at Alliance Française, Nairobi on Saturday, September 10, 2022.
In 2020, Booktuber and literary activist Lexa Lubanga announced a new initiative the “Kenya Readathon” to celebrate writing from the East African nation. The initiative encouraged readers to promote Kenyan authors with their beautiful works as well as support local bookstores. In 2021, the second edition continued on the same trajectory online with the addition of an event at the Kenya National Theatre.
In July, Lexa Lubanga announced that the Readathon would return this September for its third year. The announcement stated, “this is a month-long reading marathon that was created in 2020 and aimed at promoting Kenyan literary works. Readers are encouraged to read Kenyan-authored books for the whole month and share their reading progress with others. We hope to bring to light upcoming authors and celebrate all our works ever published.”
While the event is really an online undertaking, this year there will be an event at the Alliance Française Nairobi on Friday from 2-7 pm. The event theme will be, “Literary Methods and The Future of Kenyan Writing.”
The event will run in partnership with the Comrades Bookhouse, Cynthia Abdallah Productions, and Wazalendo Readers. Comrades Bookhouse specializes in nurturing and promoting African writers and literature in form of novels, drama, short stories, poetry, creative non-fiction, orature, among other genres. Cynthia Abdallah Productions is a film production company that seeks to document stories through documentaries while Wazalendo Readers is a book subscription box that sends out only Kenyan-authored books monthly accompanied by bookish gifts.
Some of those who will exhibit will be Nuria Store, Prestige Bookshop, Down Riverroad, and Writers Guild Kenya.
