Ghana International Book Fair 2016 set for August

The Ghana International Book Fair 2016, the fourteen running of the fair, is scheduled for Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th August, 2016 at the National Theater, Accra, Ghana. The theme for this year’s event is “Growing the Knowledge-based Economy through Reading.”

This year the whole publishing industry in Ghana has come together to take part in the festival so that everyone within it benefits. Therefore there shall be the participation of the Ghana Book Publishers Association, the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Library Authority, Ghana National Commission on Culture, the Copyright Administration Office of Ghana, the Ghana Book Development Council, the Ghana Printers and Paper Converters Association, Ghana Library Association and the Ghana Association of Writers.

This event will also happily coincide with the Ghana book season which happens to be in August which should ensure publishers make bumper sales. I suspect this will be a good time for a reader to get their favoured book in Accra at more reasonable prices.

This book fair looks more like a trade fair for books more than an author fest if the communication from the organisers of the event is anything to go by. Their Facebook page urges you to attend the fair so that you can get the following benefits;

  • Trading in favorable book Market.
  • Networking with both local and international book industry players.
  • Opportunity to observe what competitors are doing to enhance organizational innovation.
  • Building human resource capacity through training schemes organized.
  • Opportunity to interact with book readers to ascertain their book needs etc.

They state that the Book Fair Team is liaising with some foreign institutions to facilitate the participation of many international publishers and book industry players.

We shall keep up abreast of events as when they become available.

P.S. Incidentally, the Hargeysa International Book Fair this year will be having Ghana as its partner and that event will feature writers like Amma Darko and Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond.
