We share five literary festivals lovers of writing can attend across Africa in July 2019.
Lovers of African writing have been enjoying the last few days as “Africa Writes” rolled into the capital of Brexit. They have been able to see some of the best writers, poets, intellectuals and everything writing. If you are interested in African writing, you don’t have to be in London to meet some of your favourite writing people. Here are five events across the continent that you can attend this month.
- Abuja Literary Festival 2019 – Abuja, Nigeria. July 11- 13.
The Abuja Literary Festival will be happening at the Exhibition Hall, Area 10, Garki in the capital on Nigeria from July 11- 13. The theme for the festival this year is “Arts & Social Consciousness.” Bibliophiles will interact with among others Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Eghosa Imasuen, Ayodele Olofintuade, Chuma Nwokolo, TJ Benson, Richard Ali, Aishat Abiri, Tolu Daniel, Olusegun Adeniyi, Chika Oduah, and Tunde Leye. There will also be film screenings and a poetry grand slam for lovers of this form.
- Niyi Osundare International Poetry Festival 2019 – Calabar, Nigeria. July 15 to 17.
The Niyi Osundare International Poetry Festival was set up in honour of Nigerian poet and academic Niyi Osundare. The festival, now in its fifth year, will feature eminent critic and academic, Prof Biodun Jeyifo delivering the keynote speech entitled ‘Popular Poetry and the Search for Development in the Modern State.’ Others to speak at the event are Professors JOJ Agbada, Saleh Abdu and Joe Ushie as well as Dr Obari Gomba and poet Odia Ofeimun.
- Hargeysa International Book Fair 2019 – Hargeisa, Somaliland. July 20-25.
The Hargeysa International Book Fair, founded by Jama Musse Jama, is an annual cultural event in the Somaliland city of Hargeysa. The fair, now in its twelfth year, with the theme “coexistence” has Egypt as the partner country. Bibliophiles can expect to interact with Nadifa Mohamed, Donald Molosi, Billy Kahora, Hassan Ghedi Santur, Maaza Mengiste, Hilda Twongyeirwe, and Zukiswa Wanner.
- Garoowe International Book Fair 2019 – Garowe, Somalia. July 23-25.
The Garoowe International Book Fair will be hosted in Garowe with the theme “knowledge is light.” The fair promises emerging young writers, poets, scholars, and artists for the three days of the festival organised by Scansom publishers and the SIDRA Institute.
- Poetas D’Alma International Festival 2019 – Maputo, Mozambique. July 25-27.
The Poetas D’Alma International Festival, the first poetry festival in Maputo (that we know off), will be hosted at the Centro Cultural Mocambicano Alemao, Goethe Zentrum. Lovers of poetry will interact with poets like Busiswe Mahlangu, Danai Mupotsa, and Vangile Gantsho.
- Zimbabwe International Book Fair 2019 – Harare, Zimbabwe. July 29 – August 2.
The Zimbabwe International Book Fair is one of the most respected on the continent. While the glory days of the fair are long gone, bibliophiles can still see some of their favourite writers, especially of the schoolbook variety, in Harare.
