Tsitsi Dangarembga, Lauren Ann Beukes, Victor Ehighale Ehikhamenor, Yared Zeleke and Fathy Adly Salama are the Artists In Residency recipients at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Bellagio, Italy. They were selected from the longlist that was announced in December 2015.
These artists will now take part in the Artists In Residency (AIR) programme which has provided artists across discipline (visual arts; literary arts; performing arts; music & film) with the opportunity to participate in residency programmes throughout the world.
The AIR programme was set up by the Africa Centre in 2011 to provide artists from Africa the opportunity to participate in residencies throughout the world. The residencies are awarded in visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, music and film.
Tsitsi Dangarembga is an author and filmmaker who is famous for the 1988 novel Nervous Conditions which was a smash followed by its sequel The Book of Not. Her most famous movie is 1993’s Neria. She is the chair of the 2016 Writivism Short Story Prize panel of judges
Lauren Beukes is the author of award winning author of books like Moxyland, Zoo City, Broken Monsters, The Shining Girls and Maverick. She has won awards like the Strands critics awards, the Arthur C Clarke Award among others.
Victor Ehikhamenor’s book is Excuse Me a book with essays from the columns that he wrote while working for Next Newspaper. He is also a well-known visual artist and photographer.
The other artists who have qualified for the residency are filmmaker Yared Zeleke and performing artist Fathy Adly Salama.
