Anis Arafai’s The Circus of Imaginary Beasts was declared the winner of the Multaqa Prize for the Arabic Short Story 2022 on Monday, February 6, 2023.
The Al Multaqa Prize, a partnership between the American University in Kuwait and a cultural circle led by Kuwaiti writer Taleb Alrefai, was launched in December 2015. The prize for short stories has been won previously by among others Mazen Maarouf (2016), Shahla Ujayli (2017), and Diaa Jubaili (2018).
The fifth edition of the award was handed out at a ceremony at the American University of the Middle East in Kuwait on Monday. The winner was Anis Arafai short story The Circus of Imaginary Beasts issued by Lines and Shadows House for Publishing and Distribution. The Moroccan received the US$20,000 prize money; all who were shortlisted also receive US$5,000.
