The “master of the contemporary short story” Alice Munro is the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature 2013. She is the 2009 winner of the Man Booker International Prize for her lifetime body of work, she is also a three-time winner of Canada’s Governor General’s Award for fiction.
African writers have been known for winning this the most famous and coveted of prizes for literature. They include Wole Soyinka, JM Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer. East Africa hasn’t had the best time with this prize. Our Ngugi Wa Thiongo who was seen as a possible contender will have to wait another year to be billed yet again to be the next almost Nobel Prize winner. Good times.
