Congolese author and academic Alain Mabanckou will present three of his titles at the Alliance Française, Nairobi on Thursday, March 10, 2022.
Alain Mabanckou isn’t a new name to anyone who has been following the literary scene in recent times. He is a novelist, journalist, poet, and academic, a French citizen born in the Republic of the Congo and is currently a Professor of Literature at UCLA. He is best known for his novels and non-fiction writing in French depicting the experience of contemporary Africa and the African diaspora in France.
Starting with his 1998 debut Bleu-Blanc-Rouge (Blue White Red) some of his most famous novels have been African Psycho (2003), Verre cassé (Broken Glass) (2005), Mémoires de porc-épic (Memoirs of a Porcupine) (2006), Demain j’aurai vingt ans (Tomorrow I’ll Be Twenty) (2010), Lumières de Pointe-Noire (The Lights of Pointe-Noire) (2013), Petit Piment (Black Moses) (2015), and his most recent Les Cigognes sont immortelles (The Death of Comrade President) (2018). Apart from these novels he has written numerous poetry and essay collections. A majority of his titles are translated into several languages including English.
Alain Mabanckou is arguably the most awarded African who writes in French with some of his accolades being Prix de la Société des poètes français, Grand prix littéraire d’Afrique noire, Prix du roman Ouest-France-Etonnants Voyageurs, Prix des cinq continents de la francophonie, Prix RFO du livre, Prix Renaudot, Prix de La Rentrée littéraire, Prix Aliénor d’Aquitaine, Prix Créateurs Sans Frontières, Georges Brassens Prize 2010, Prix Prince Pierre de Monaco 2013, as well as the Académie Française Prize: Grand Prix de littérature Henri Gal for his entire work.
Mabanckou will make his Nairobi debut this week to present his debut novel, Bleu-Blanc-Rouge (Blue White Red), Verre cassé (Broken Glass), and Demain j’aurai vingt ans (Tomorrow I’ll Be Twenty). He will be a guest at the Alliance Française this Thursday for those who will to see the legendary writer in the flesh.
