The longlist for the Afritondo Short Story Prize 2020 was announced on February 5, 2020.

Afritondo is a media and publishing platform that aims to connect with and tell the stories of Africans and black minority populations across the globe. The platform made a call out for submissions of short stories for their new award the Afritondo Short Story Prize worth US$1,000 to the winner. The prize would be judged by Megan Ross (Chair), Gloria Mwaniga, and Kelechi Njoku.

For the first edition of the prize, it has emerged that there were 421 entries from 19 countries from across the continent. The team has announced the longlist of 21 outstanding entries gotten with the help of a team of readers for the award. The award longlist announced is;

  • Of Dead Things That Come Alive – Joshua Chizoma (Nigeria)
  • Remember Your Father – Ifeoma Nwosu (Nigeria)
  • Shiva Eyes – Cynthia Kistasamy (South Africa)
  • Stimulus – Deborah Vuha (Ghana)
  • The Beast and The Boy Who Lives Close To My House – Phillip Leteka (Lesotho)
  • The Thing Not Said – Phillippa Yaa de Villiers (South Africa)
  • Thursday Before Last – Noel Cheruto (Kenya)
  • Yellow Means Stay – Hannah Onoguwe (Nigeria)
  • Touch Me Not – Davina Philomena Kawuma (Uganda)

The shortlist will be announced in March 2020 with the final winner announced shortly afterwards.
