The shortlists for this year’s edition of the Text Book Centre Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature 2017 have been announced.

The Text Book Centre Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature is a biennial literary award given by the Kenya Publishers’ Association starting in 1974. It is considered the most prestigious literary award in the east African country. The most recent winner of the prize in 2015 were Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor for her book Dust and John Habwe for his book Pendo La Karaha in the Kiswahili category. Other winners of the prizes include Meja Mwangi, Wahome Mutahi, Margaret Ogola, Ngumi Kibera, and Stanley Gazemba.

The organisers of the awards have announced those who are in the running for this year’s edition of the awards. The awards will be given in the categories of children’s, youth and adult in both English and Kiswahili. Those in the running include;

English Adult Category

  • The Whistleblower by Samuel Wachira published by Longhorn Publishers
  • The Elephant Dance by Henry Ole Kulet published by Longhorn Publishers

Kiswahili Adult Category

  • Majira ya Utasa by Timothy Arege published by Spotlight Publishers
  • Mashetani Wa Alepo by Tom Olali published by Jomo Kenyatta Foundation
  • Kigodo Cha Simanzi na Hadithi Zingine by Jeff Mandila published by Jomo Kenyatta Foundation

English Youth Category

  • Ghost and Fortune Hunters by Goro Wa Kamau published by Longhorn Publishers
  • The Wind Under His Wings by Erick Livumbazi published by Storymoja Publishers
  • The Dreamer by Imali J. Abala published by Nsemia Inc Publishers

Kiswahili Youth Category

  • Adhabu Ya Mahaba by Peter Juma published by Longhorn Publishers
  • Zaidi Ya Mipaka by Jeff Mandila published by Jomo Kenyatta Foundation
  • Majilio Ya Mkombozi by Mwenda Mbatiah published by Moran Publishers Ltd

English Children Category

  • Koko Riko Take it Easy by Muthoni Muchemi published by Storymoja Africa
  • Joe’s Amazing Friends by Winnie Thuku published by Longhorn Publishers
  • Two Huts on Two Hills by Charles Gecaga published by Longhorn Publishers

The winners in all the categories will be announced during the Nairobi International Book Fair which takes place September 27 – October 1. The event is organised by the Kenya Publishers Association.
