Prudence Katomeni and Adipo Sidang’ are the featured artists at the Goethe-Insititut Nairobi’s Artistic Encounters in June 14, 2018. They will be moderated by Zukiswa Wanner.
Artistic Encounters is a project running out of Goethe-Institut Kenya where two artists of different genres meet and share their art in front of an audience. Started in 2017, the project curated by Zukiswa Wanner, has artists of different types share the stage at the institute’s Maendeleo House in Nairobi. In its first year the project had artist Victor Ehikhamenor and poet Koleka Putuma, trumpeter Christine Kamau and poet Philipp Khabo Koepsell, novelist Lola Shoneyin and storyteller Maimouna Jallow, as well as author Angela Makholwa and actress Patricia Kihoro.
The first edition of Artistic Encounters for 2018 kicked off in May with novelist, short story writer and academic Pede Hollist and actor Hana Kefela in May to a packed house.
The June edition of Artistic Encounters will feature the talents of Zimbabwe musician Prudence Katomeni and Kenyan poet Adipo Sidang’. Prudence Katomeni not only has one of the most soulful voices in the Southern African country but plays instruments like the Mbira. A household name in Zimbabwe for her work in music and film since she was in high school in the 90s, she has also released songs like Baba vaBoy and Stronger which enjoyed favourable airplay on Zimbabwean stations. Arguably the best female jazz musician, Katomeni has toured extensively in the UK, Germany and Norway among other countries. Check her song Anenge below.
Adipo Sidang’ is a Nairobi based poet with a poetry collection entitled Parliament of Owls which debuted in 2016. Apart from being a poet Sidang’ is also a writer of Young Adult fiction with his book A Boy Named Koko winning the local edition of the Burt Award for African Literature in 2017.
