Mulumba Ivan Matthias launches ‘The Honking’ and ‘Rumblings of a Tree’

Ugandan writer Mulumba Ivan Matthias launched his two books The Honking and Rumblings of a Tree in Kampala, Uganda on August 10, 2017.

Mulumba Ivan Matthias initially born in Masaka District in the Central Region of Uganda and now based in Kampala has the day job of valuation surveyor. In 2012, he produced Poetry In Potion a collection of poetry that was well received in the Kampala literary space.

On August 10 this year, the writer would give the people of Kampala more sugar with a launch of more books at the Ibamba Restaurant at the Uganda Museum.

The event started with arrival of the book lovers who had to deal with rain and traffic congestion that did not dissuade them. A music interlude got them in the mood for the evening before the emcee for the evening formally welcomed them to the event and invited Jason Ntaro to wow the audience with his poetry.

Jason performed two poems. It was a spirited poetry performance that brought warmth into an audience that had faced threat of drizzles.

The emcee invited the author to the stage. In his speech, the author gave a brief history about the two books and when he wrote them. He started The Honking in 2008 when he was a first year student at Makerere University. Rumblings of a Tree has poems he wrote between 2005 and 2016.

Alexander Twino of Turn the page Africa talked to the audience about the books before the author read from two books. To make the session mote interactive, people from the audience read some sections from the books. Kagayi Peter and Jason Ntaro read poems from ‘Rumblings of a tree’. Tino Akware and Edna Ninsima read sections from The Honking.

At the end of the readings from each book, the audience interacted with author. They asked questions which the author answered. These ranged from what was the author’s inspiration write, whether work was autobiographical or about people the author knew and had met, how it feels to have three books and the change of tone in the two collections of poetry.

In attendance were Glaydah Namukasa, editor and Chairperson of Femrite, Nakisanze Segawa, author, Joel Ntwatwa, author, Bonnetventure Asiimwe, designer, journalists and a number of book lovers.

The event ended with book signing for those who had copies.
